Guilford Country Store Gets A New Heating System PDF Print E-mail

The first major change for the Guilford Country Store by the new owners, Friends Of Algiers Village Inc., occurred in February when a new heating system was installed. An ultra efficient propane gas furnace has replaced the monstrous old oil burner boiler. This work had not been planned for this stage of the building's reconstruction but the unreliability-and poor efficiency of the existing unit dictated the change. The new unit, a fraction of the size of the old furnace, permits the furnace to use air for combustion from the out of doors, thus contributing to its overall efficiency. It also allowed for more storage space in the basement as both the old furnace and the two oil storage tanks there will be removed. Local contractor Mark Garland installed the unit which was obtained through Merrill Gas of Brattleboro. Victor Johnson of Guilford performed the necessary electrical work.

This installation permitted new circulators to be installed, one for each zone, and replacing an old highly inefficient single unit. Hour meters were installed on each of the buildings four heating zones . These will permit the owners to charge each tenant for only the exact proportion of the heating bills that their unit requires. The owners, working with the Architect Jim Williams, are now concentrating on redoing the area allotted to the building's retail space. The fund drive for the building continues to help pay for the extensive work being planned.
