It's an old maxim that when you ask how much something is going to cost in the world of web design and development, you usually get a "that depends" which is often unhelpful if you are trying to get a "ballpark" idea of how much money to spend. While it is true that there are many variables to consider with regard to projects of this nature, in today's budget conscious climate, it is often helpful to know what sort of range you are dealing with at the beginning so that you can plan accordingly. So, with that in mind...
A small to mid-sized, non-content managed website (ie, static html/php pages) including custom graphics and html, content insertion, standard server configuration, SEO and QA will usually be in the $400-$900 range. PROS: cheaper; faster development; runs on any host CONS: poor scalability and flexibility, hidden maintainence costs later as site must be administered via an FTP based site management client (such as Dreamweaver, Contribute, etc..) requiring purchase and knowlege of said FTP management client (which works by keeping copies of entire site offline - usually tied to one computer - altering files and then uploading).
On the other hand, a small to mid-sized, content managed website (CMS, ie, Joomla, Wordpress) including custom template, content insertion, semi-custom modules and functionality, server configuration, SEO and QA will usually be in the neighborhood of $600-$1500 depending on the level of customization, complexity and functionality needed. PROS: easy to maintain - administered by you from any computer via a web interface from any location; low maintainence costs CONS: slightly slower and more expensive to set up; hosts must have certain system requirements to work
Large and enterprise scale websites involving features such as e-commerce, inventory control and integration with legacy software will run into the several thousand dollars and will need to be quoted based on detailed requirement documentation.
We generally work with (and recommend) the Joomla CMS for its low cost (open source), robust feature set, excellent documentation and support community. All of our content managed sites come with a free 6mos. of system aftercare including site backups and updates of the CMS core as they become available; administration support (tutorial and manual).
